I bought an Nvidia Gforce FX 5500 awhile back and for some reason I can't make it work with CS, it lags me out soo bad that I can't play, maybe someone can give me a hint why?

i'm assuming you've already done the basics like update drivers and stuff so i won't bore you with that.
well a 5500 is about 100x better than what you need to run cs so the processing should be fine. the only problem i can see is if somehow your GPU is acting as both your CPU and GPU which would create a lot of FPS lag, but if that's the case i don't know how youw ould go around fixing that.

Update: Now i can get it to work BUT it will only work in software mode . If I try it in OpenGL then ALL the walls and such look like a d**n rainbow. That and direct 3D both make it so I can't see ANY word products, such as the scores, friends or anything that I type and anyone that has played the game in software mode knows how CRAPY!! the game looks.

Try to roll back your drivers. My roomate had a similar problem (he has a different card) in TF2. He rolled back his drivers and all was well.

oh i just got a 8600 gt superclocked and i got the same problem you had so i'll just tell you the same solution i found. open the NVIDIA control panel thing where you can adjust your settings for the video card. then select manage 3D settings. scroll down to the last option which should be vertical sync and turn that to force off. that should fix it.

That didn't work, the maps are still rainbowed and everything like friends and such are still blurred.

turn everything to force off. if that works, then one by one start turning things back to their default settings.

Actually, my bad, I did have the updated drivers installed, I rolled them back and it works fine now. Except now all my other stuff doesn't look quite as good . But now I don't have to switch video cards (onboard and PCI) anymore when I want to play two different games because to play GW I HAVE to have the Nvidia.

oh if you had an onboard video card you could disable that one in BIOS which would force your system to only use the NVidia

Well, in my BIOS, it only allows 2 choices, one or the other.

congratulations. you have single handedly exhausted all the easier/well known fixes for NVidia issues.
i'm also correct in assuming you were smart enough to plug your monitor into your NVidia monitor slot instead of your integrated display slot?
