I just bought a new headset (Dynex DX-208) and everything works fine except for the mic. I get a lot of weird static that noticeably repeats and gets louder as it repeats. Am I looking at a hardware or software issue? I'm running an MSI laptop with Realtek HD audio with latests drivers.

first check to make sure that your mic is in the mic port and not another. That used to happen to my mic when i made that mistake.

Yep it's in the mic port. I really think it's more software-side.

Yea, I have a problem with my mic to, I have a Logitech headset, and I have both mic volumes ALL the way up but people are having a hard time hearing me. I also have mic boost on.

I guess I kinda got my problem figured out. There's no background noise now but it's really quiet. Oh well I'll live.
